North Carolina – Barber-Scotia College hires Dr. Kellie Dixon as the Vice President for Institutional Effectiveness. She will be responsible for providing leadership, expertise, direction, and support for the college’s mission, vision, values, and goals. Dr. Dixon will oversee the planning and execution of key institutional effectiveness functions, including strategic planning, accreditation, research, and support of college and system initiatives. As an administrator and college leader, she will work to establish and retain a high-quality IE Office team to provide a foundational resource for college strategies and initiatives.

Dr. Dixon joins the college after serving in various leadership positions in higher education. She served as a full-time lecturer in the learning and organizational change doctoral program at Baylor University. Dr. Dixon has multiple academic publications, primarily focused on institutional effectiveness, student affairs assessment, equity-centered practices in higher education, historically Black colleges and universities, and student success. She is the current Assistant Editor for CAS Standard and a 2023 ACPA Diamond Honoree. Dr. Dixon serves on the editorial advisory board for Research and Practice in Assessment Journal. She has an associate degree from Danville Community College, a bachelor’s and master’s from Longwood University, and a doctorate in organizational leadership from Grand Canyon University.

Barber-Scotia College president Chris Rey stated, “Dr. Dixon’s years of experience in institutional effectiveness will be invaluable to the college as we begin the process of accreditation. We are excited to see Barber-Scotia rise under Dr. Dixons leadership, and we see a bright future ahead.”

Barber-Scotia College was established on January 27, 1867, as Scotia Seminary for African American women in Concord, North Carolina.

In 1916, the name was changed to Scotia Women’s College. In 1930, Barber Memorial College of Anniston, Alabama, merged with Scotia Women’s College. The present name, Barber-Scotia College was adopted in 1932.

On April 2, 1954, the charter of Barber-Scotia College was amended to admit students without regard to ethnicity or gender.

Notable graduates include Mary-McCloud Bethune, Dr. Paulette Dillard, President of Shaw University, and Vivian Ayers Allen, the mother of Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen. The mission of the college has always focused on total student development as etched in the Faith Hall cornerstone: “For Head, Hand and Heart.”
