Barber-Scotia College Hires Dr. Jeffrey S. Weaver As The Executive Vice President And Provost​

North Carolina – Barber-Scotia College hires Dr. Jeffrey S. Weaver as the Executive Vice President and Provost. He will serve as the college’s chief academic officer, guiding the academic mission and other key divisions across campus. He will work strategically to advance student success, support faculty and staff development, and enhance the many ways that Barber-Scotia serves its students and communities.

Dr. Weaver joins the college after serving in leadership positions in higher education, the U.S. Army, federal government, and private industry. Through his 35 years of experience, he brings a robust skill set, including organization leadership and executive leader experiences in multi-faceted organizations Dr. Weaver has served on the faculty at the University of Maryland and as the chair of the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Council of the University of Baltimore. He earned his Ph.D. in 2008 from Capella University in organizational management and human resource management, his master’s from Central Michigan University, and a bachelor’s from Park University.

Barber-Scotia College president Chris Rey stated, “We are excited to bring Dr. Weaver to Barber-Scotia College as he guides us through our reaccreditation. Reimagining the historically black college and university experience for our students is our priority and Dr. Weaver’s multifaceted experience as a change agent will add to our ability to rise as an institution.

Barber-Scotia College was established on January 27, 1867, as Scotia Seminary for African American women in Concord, North Carolina.

In 1916, the name was changed to Scotia Women’s College. In 1930, Barber Memorial College of Anniston, Alabama, merged with Scotia Women’s College. The present name, Barber-Scotia College was adopted in 1932.

On April 2, 1954, the charter of Barber-Scotia College was amended to admit students without regard to ethnicity or gender.

Notable graduates include Mary-McCloud Bethune, Dr. Paulette Dillard, President of Shaw University, and Vivian Ayers Allen, the mother of Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen. The mission of the college has always focused on total student development as etched in the Faith Hall cornerstone: “For Head, Hand and Heart.”
