Barber-Scotia College Hires Dr. Tiffany C. Tuma as the Dean of Students

North Carolina- Barber-Scotia College hires Dr. Tiffany C. Tuma as the Dean of Students. Dr. Tuma will be responsible for fostering formation, character development, and personal growth among the students at Barber-Scotia College. As well as, coordinate formation events and series, meet with students regularly for mentorship, offer students correction and accountability necessary for personal growth, and join in the events and activities that make up the life of the College.

Dr. Tuma possesses over 10 years of experience in higher education supporting students in advising, disability services, enrollment management, first-year experience, student conduct and Title IX. Along with her experience in higher education, Dr.Tuma has also worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) in the Education and Outreach Division (E&O). She has a Bachelor of Arts from Georgia State University, a master’s from Auburn University, and a PhD from Jackson State University.

Barber-Scotia College president Chris Rey stated, “Dr. Tuma’s experience working within the postsecondary education sector which includes advising and ensuring students have the support needed to succeed are a good combination to assist Barber-Scotia College. Her mentoring experience will be a great asset to nurturing our students.”

Barber-Scotia College was established on January 27, 1867, as Scotia Seminary for African American women in Concord, North Carolina.

In 1916, the name was changed to Scotia Women’s College. In 1930, Barber Memorial College of Anniston, Alabama, merged with Scotia Women’s College. The present name, Barber-Scotia College was adopted in 1932.

On April 2, 1954, the charter of Barber-Scotia College was amended to admit students without regard to ethnicity or gender.

Notable graduates include Mary-McCloud Bethune, Dr. Paulette Dillard, President of Shaw University, and Vivian Ayers Allen, the mother of Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen. The mission of the college has always focused on total student development as etched in the Faith Hall cornerstone: “For Head, Hand and Heart.”
